What is FEES?

Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) is a cutting-edge diagnostic procedure designed to evaluate and improve swallowing function. This specialized study utilizes a flexible endoscope—a thin, flexible tube equipped with a camera—that is gently inserted through the nose to reach the throat.

How Does FEES Work?

  1. Procedure: The endoscope provides a clear, real-time view of the pharynx, larynx, and upper esophageal opening.
  2. Observation: The patient consumes various food and drink items that are dyed with food coloring for better visibility.
  3. Evaluation: A certified Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) carefully observes the swallowing process, assessing its efficiency and safety, identifying any signs of aspiration (food or liquid entering the airway), and recommending appropriate dietary modifications.
