Everyone deserves the ability to communicate – to participate fully in daily routines and connect with the people they love. However, some individuals face conditions that affect their ability to use verbal speech effectively. For these individuals, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) strategies, such as speech-generating devices (SGDs), can provide immediate access to functional language, empowering them to express their wants, needs, and emotions.
At First Expressions, we are proud to partner with the California Department of Rehabilitation through the Voice Options Program – an incredible initiative that allows our Speech-Language Pathologists/Assistants the privilege of helping children and adults find their voice through the use of assistive technology.
Through this program, eligible individuals who are nonspeaking or have significant difficulty with speech may qualify for a free speech-generating device (SGD). The program’s mission is to ensure full and equal communication access for all Californians with speech and language challenges.
A Speech-Generating Device may benefit:
Individuals who are currently nonspeaking due to autism or selective mutism
Individuals with limited verbal communication due to structural or functional conditions, including but not limited to:
Childhood apraxia of speech
Neurogenic conditions (e.g., stroke, traumatic brain injury)
Head and neck cancers (e.g., laryngectomy, glossectomy)
Neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Parkinson’s disease, ALS, dementia)
Available Speech-Generating Applications for Trial:
With guidance from one of our licensed speech-language pathologists, eligible individuals can trial the following AAC apps to determine the best fit:
